WikiLeaks release of diplomatic cables
The Diplomatic Cables, Secret No More

Re “A Note to Readers: The Decision to Publish Diplomatic Documents” (Nov. 29):

You seem to believe that disclosing diplomatic conversations will not have a dangerous chilling effect on the diplomats’ work. But are you willing to have your internal editorial discussions published? To have others decide what will and what won’t compromise your news-gathering methods? Would that not chill your ability to work?

We’ll know the answers when WikiLeaks publishes a trove of secret New York Times documents.

original/unedited letter:

To the Editor:

Re: "A Note to Readers: The Decision to Publish Diplomatic Documents"
(Nov 28, 2010) and "Untenable Judicial Ethics" (editorial, Nov 27,
2010):

The Times' decision to publish illegally obtained classified documents
exposes the newspaper to charges of hypocrisy,
and makes it a less credible critic of others' shady practices. For
example, you question whether judges can properly make their own
recusal decisions --
but not whether you can make your own redaction decisions about the
secret documents. If judges may be unconsciously influenced by gifts,
might not you be influenced by the prospect of bigger newspaper sales?

You believe you're acting in the public interest. But so might a
judge who thinks his decisions will be the most fair. What about a
politician
who believes that his election (by whatever means) will serve the public good?

You believe that disclosing diplomatic conversations will not have a
dangerous chilling effect on the diplomats' work. But are you willing
to have your
internal editorial discussions published? To have others decide what
will and what won't compromise your news-gathering methods?
Would that not chill _your_ ability to work?

We'll know the answers when WikiLeaks publishes its trove of secret
New York Times documents.
